Herb & Garlic Buttermilk Loaf

 

You may never buy a commercial garlic bread again after tasting this bread.  

Ingrediends:

2 tsp dry yeast
¼ cup warm water
½ tsp sugar
½ cup melted butter
¾ cup buttermilk
¼ tsp bi-carb soda
2 ½ cups plain flour
1 tsp crushed garlic
1 tblsp oregano
1 tblsp olive oil

Method:

1. Place the yeast, tsp sugar in the warm water and let stand until bubbles appear.
2. Melt the butter and add the buttermilk and sugar, keep at room temp
In another bowl mix the oregano, oil and garlic.
3. Preheat oven to 200°c.
4. Place the flour in a mixer with the dough hook attached, on low speed add the yeast mix and slowly combine, add the butter mix and mix until a soft dough is formed.
5. Place in an oiled bowl covered with a tea towel and let stand for about an hour to double in size.
6. Mix in the herb and garlic mixture and divide the dough into three even pieces, roll into cm logs and plait into a loaf.
7. Place the loaf onto a oiled baking tray and let rise for another ½ hour. Brush with a little buttermilk and bake for 40 minutes until golden brown.
